Choice of locality - Šumava





The Šumava Mountains are one of oldest chain of mountains in Central Europe, formed by stones of Palaeozoic age, primarily from granite and gneiss. They have wooded hilly hillsides with wide tablelands and valleys. The Křemenná and Vydra Rivers run through the valleys. The large territories of the mountains Šumava are situated near southwest borders of Czech Republic with Germany and Austria. The National Park Šumava was declared in the year 1999, as a greatest national park in Czech Republic. With regard to location in the centre of heavily populated Central Europe with well preserved of nature and water resources, Šumava is very often called as a “(Green Lungs of Europe)”. On the territory of NP are many uncommon natural communities with requirement of their prevention. Especially they pertain to rare remains of virgin forest, icy lakes, mountains and valley. Our portrayal of Šumava has somewhat larger sense and includes whole regions Domažlice, Klatovy, part of Prachaticko and Českokrumlovsko.
The location: The region Šumava we can find near southwest border of Czech Republic with Germany and Austria, between Železná Ruda, (tourist centre and a border checkpoint), in the northwest and Zvonkovou near Horní Planá, in the southeast. The extent is 69.030 hectares.
The important and entering places: Železná Ruda, Kašperské Mountains, Stachy, Vimperk, Lenora, Volary and Nová Pec.
Altitude is between 600 m and 1378 m above sea level - (Plechý).
Climate: It depends upon of altitude. The growing weather is in the Valley of Vltava River, as far as a cool zone and rainfall, concerning of higher localities of mountains a rain or snowfall is possible. The average temperature is 6, 5 – 3, 5 0C.
